Alla Kovgan, born in Moscow, is a New York and Berlin-based writer/director and editor known for Cunningham (2019), an award-winning 3D film about Merce Cunningham distributed in 35 countries, shortlisted for LOLA awards (Germany), premiered at Toronto, NY, BFI London and many other festivals; 3D VR Devil's Lungs with Finnish rock band Suistamon Sähkö (Grand Prix, Vienna Shorts, 2018) that made Kovgan the Artist- in-Residence at the Museum Quarter 21 in Vienna; Nora (30 awards in both doc and fiction category, 2008) with Zimbabwean choreographer Nora Chipaumire; Movement Revolution Africa (2007) with nine contemporary dance companies from Africa; an Emmy-nominated Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North (Sundance, 2008) about the role of the North in the US slave trade, and others.

The Jury: At the core of the programme is a portrait of dance, a perfect combination of 2D and 3D, archives, dance, interviews, music and graphics. The storytelling is full of small treasures showing other layers of the film; music and the absence of music, the sounds of dance in perfect combination with the music of John Cage and Eric Satie; a poetic fusion of old and new choreography, old and new archival material; the innovative use of graphics, never repeating the same pattern on the one hand and not overdoing with the novelty one the other; the storytelling giving the viewer only hints about certain phases and relationships in Merce Cunningham's life. The film is a true reminder of Cunningham work and his influence in contemporary dance, for us and for future generations alike - a dancing poetry, a poetry of dance.

Historjá – Stygn för Sápmi (Historjá – Stitches for Sápmi)

Direction: Thomas Jackson. Actors: Britta Marakatt-Labba, John-Isak Labba, Nils Johannes Labba. Sound Track: Eirik Havnes. Editing: Kaveh Akaber. Producers: Pelle Nilsson, Mattias Nohrborg. Producing Organisation: BRF. Coproducing Organisations: SVT, Filmpool Nord.

The poetic and striking Historjá – Stitches for Sápmi, takes us to the front line of climate change, as seen through the eyes of world-renowned artist and activist Britta Marakatt-Labba. The film's narration follows Labba's art piece Historjá, a 24-meter-long embroidery with imagery from Sámi history. The embroidery was a breakthrough for Marakatt-Labba at Documenta 14 in Kassel. With small stitches, she brings forward the history and mythology of the Sámi people, alongside stories of colonialism, her people´s political struggles and state-supported racism. Now she, her family and the Sámi people face an existential battle, as climate change threatens contemporary reindeer herding and by that the existence of Sámi culture. Will it be possible for her son to carry on the family tradition?
